Romantische Straße
A very special place for us. I proposed to Sue on the Romantische Straße at Rothenburg ob der Tauber. We have revisited this wonderful area of Germany many times and went back to Rothenburg in March 2009 to celebrate our wedding anniversary.
The Romantische Straße, Romantic Road, describes the 220 miles of highway between Würzburg and Füssen in Bavaria, linking a number of picturesque towns and castles. In medieval times it was a trade route that connected the centre of Germany with the south. Today this region is thought by many international travellers to possess "quintessentially German" scenery and culture, in towns and cities such as Nördlingen, Dinkelsbühl and Rothenburg ob der Tauber and in castles such as Burg Harburg and the famous Neuschwanstein.
On our first visit, we drove the entire length of the Romantische Straße in my Alfa Romeo sports car. This time, we only did a short section, starting at Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Wandered the city streets, walked round the walls and visited the castle and Criminal Museum, containing various punishment and torture devices used during the Middle Ages. Treated ourselves to a Schneeball, deep-fried dough shaped like a snowball and covered in chocolate!
Next stop, Dinkelsbühl.
Our final visit was Nördlingen.
